Towards a fair and sustainable streaming economy?

Last year, global revenue from recorded music grew by 9%, driven by growth in paid streaming subscriptions. But despite industry growth, fewer DIY artists generated over 10 000 USD on Spotify in 2022 than they did in 2021. So how close are we to a fair and sustainable streaming economy? This talk explores the current state of the streaming economy and its implications for music companies as well as artists through a series of questions: How does algorithmic curation on platforms like Spotify and TikTok impact the ways we listen to music and the possibilities for breaking an artist? Alternative revenue models like the User-Centric Distribution have been proposed to make streaming fairer, but why haven’t it been implemented at a large scale? And how does recent developments in AI and internet infrastructure challenge existing business models?
